The Tigers celebrate their team title at the Don Meyers Fridley Invitational.
FRIDLEY, MN - DECEMBER 3, 2016 - The Tiger wrestlers opened their 2016-17 season in impressive fashion. They brought home the team title at the Don Meyers Fridley Invitational for the second consecutive year - finishing the tournament with 203.5 team points. Zimmerman placed second, but way back from the Tigers, with 124 team points.
Delano had four individual champions to lead the way. Carson Tschudi won the 120 lb. bracket, going 2-0 on the day with a technical fall, 16-0 in the finals. Tanner Kroells won the 126 lb. bracket, going 3-0 on the day, and a 8-0 major decision in the finals. Tucker Sjomeling won the 138 lb. bracket, going 3-0 on the day, and a 15-5 major decision in the finals. And Steven Hajas won the 220 lb. bracket, going 3-0 on the day, finishing with a 3rd-period pin in the finals.
While four champions earned a substantial amount of team points, the strength of the Tigers on this day was their depth throughout the lineup. Delano received lots of team points all throughout their lineup. Walker Russek placed 2nd in the Hwt. bracket. The Tigers had five 3rd-place finishers. Reier Sjomeling at 113, Camden Tschudi at 152, Eli McCune at 160, Samson Streachek at 182, and Edward Hajas at 195 - all placed 3rd in their brackets. Wally Scherer placed 6th at 106 lbs. Hayden Lynch went 1-2 and did not place at 145 lbs. And Sam Cederberg did not place after injury defaulting after suffering a broken arm in his 2nd match of the day in the 170 lb. bracket.
Senior Tucker Sjomeling added a couple more special achievements to his already impressive resume. With his 2nd win of the day, Sjomeling became the winningest wrestler in Delano history, with his 167th career win. He passed Delano alum Eric Tschudi, who held the record with 166 career wins since 1998. Sjomeling was also awarded as the Most Outstanding Wrestler - an award given as a result of votes from the coaches of all participating teams.
The Tigers travel to Annandale High School for a triangular against Annandale/Maple Lake and Saint Cloud Apollo on Friday, December 9. They come back to host their annual Delano Invitational on December 10 in the Tiger Activity Center at Delano High School.
